I was talking a few weeks ago with Rowan, an 11th grader at a local high school, about potential internships for her. I asked her what she was passionate about. She hesitated, looked at me quickly, took a deep breath and launched into the most wonderful description of how she and her friend want more than anything to be comedy writers! Rowan's eyes started to sparkle as she talked. She started talking faster and faster, almost tumbling over her words. It was fabulous!
Her enthusiasm made me want to reach into my network to help her find a connection that could be of help. I remembered my friend Anne who I went to high school with who works at Second City in Chicago. Anne was an amazing theatre performer, she and another good friend of mine, were in all the plays. I remember lots of creative, fun parties with Anne. We are now Facebook friends, but we haven't seen each other since high school, which was a long time ago!
I told Rowan about Anne, and she got really excited! One idea I had was for us to reach out to Anne and ask Anne for any suggestions for who we could reach out to in the Twin Cities. Perhaps Anne will have an idea for comedy writers here that Rowan could talk to, someone with whom she could do an Informational Interview. That's a great place to start! And, I look forward to connecting with Anne after all these years.
Another idea we had was for Rowan to explore the various improv comedy clubs here in Minneapolis. There are a few of them. Rowan agreed to stop by and talk to them over the holiday break. And Rowan and I will meet this week to take the next steps. I'm looking forward to our meeting!
